Chapter 204
Jasper never believed in coincidences. Still, when it involved Liana, he fervently wished that everything that had happened was a coincidence.
"Mr. Beckett!" Xavier jogged up to him, panting, and handed him a phone with both hands. "Here is the footage of Madam Sophia, Ms. Betty, and Ms. Gardner's activities from tonight that you requested! I gathered the files. Please take a look!"
"My guy, you're fast!" Landon changed his mind about leaving and went up to take a look.
Jasper carefully poured through the footage, holding his breath.
"Looking at the footage, Ms. Gardner not only interacted frequently with Madam Sophia, but she also contacted Ms. Betty in private. What's more bizarre..." A gleam flashed across Xavier's eyes. "... is that Ms. Gardner did not show up in the vicinity when I checked the footage of Mr. Jonah and Ms. Alyssa entering the room."
"Hah, that's interesting." Landon sneered. "If she wasn't even in the area, how did she know that Mr. Jonah and Ms. Alyssa were sharing a room? Who told her so?"
Jasper furrowed his brows. His mind was buzzing when the realization dawned on him.
At the same time, the Becketts were gathered at the front hall, including Liana.
Betty looked lifeless. She explained that she felt sick, but she was, in fact, in shock by what had happened earlier.
Thankfully, Javier had backed her up without hesitation, and with Sophia's help, she was freed from suspicion.
She glared at the innocent-looking Liana, wishing that she could claw the face of that fake bitch.
"What a surprise! There is a liar in the Beckett family." Sophia sat on the couch with an arm around Betty's shoulder. She seethed whenever she thought of the attention that Alyssa had garnered that night.
"Right. How could she have faked her identity to marry Jasper? It gives me the chills. Wait, is that considered fraud?" Liana pretended to be worried.
"That's some good teamwork. You should have put that to better use. "Smirking, Newton scanned their faces with his eagle eyes.
Sophia and Betty froze up. Jasper happened to enter the hall with a deadpan face, and he overheard Newton's acerbic comment.
"Sophia, Liana, you have been accusing Ms. Alyssa of fraud. May I know what makes her a fraud in your eyes? Did she rob you of your money, stocks, or assets?
"She fulfilled her duties as Jasper's wife. She was good to the elders and polite with Betty. She took great care of Lauren. Not only that, she did not ask for a cent in the divorce. So, what exactly makes her a fraud?"
Newton might be old, but he was sharp and quick-witted. "The three of you were busy bullying Ms. Alyssa in the three years. I wasn't living under the same roof, but I was aware of everything that went on."
"Dad, we know Ms. Alyssa's character. Sophie only said that because she was worried ..." Javier bit the bullet and attempted to smooth things over.
"I bet you knew her character only after you learned about her background." Newton leaned back and stared down at Javier's ashen face. "It's too late to regret your actions.
"You gave up the daughter of the Taylor family for another from a family that's on the brink of bankruptcy. You do know that Jasper's marriage to Alyssa Taylor meant an increase in your net worth and the ease of expanding your business in Belbanks, don't you? You've suffered a great loss."
Javier gritted his teeth as he reddened in shame. Anger swept over Sophia when she spotted Javier's regrets about Jasper's divorce.
Unfortunately, Alyssa was way above the Gardners as Winston's only daughter. It was no surprise that Javier would kick himself for suffering such a loss. 2
Jasper was about to speak, but Liana beat him to it with indignance." Grandpa, I know you have been looking down on me and my family, but you can't measure a relationship with money!"
"The Taylors might be rich, but Jasper and I are in love. As his childhood sweetheart, I was by his side in the darkest time of his childhood. Alyssa cannot replace the bond we shared!"
She ran up to Jasper and tugged at the hem of his shirt. "Jasper, say something!"
He cast a helpless and icy look at her. Despite his best attempts to recall bits and pieces of their childhood, his mind was blank. The precious memories from his childhood had faded into obscurity.
In the end, the light went out of his eyes. His voice was laden with exhaustion and disappointment. "Lia, let's put a pause on our marriage."
