Can’t Win Me Back by Ginger Sue

Chapter 538
Right after Alyssa entered Jasper’s room, Sean immediately got a call from Liam. He picked up. “Hi, Mr. Liam.”
“Sean, as her secretary, why didn’t you immediately report her whereabouts to us?” Liam interrogated Sean right away. “Why are
you at the Solana City Memorial Hospital with Lyse? Is she there to see Jasper Beckett?”
Jonah chimed in calmly, “Liam, calm down.”
Liam, usually gentle, was only out of character when it came to matters concerning his sister’s well-being.
Sean was shocked by Liam’s intel and gasped, “Mr. Liam, how... how did you know? We kept it a secret!”
“GPS tracking.”
Jonah sighed helplessly. “Liam almost put to use his method to track criminals. Tracking down Lyse was a piece of cake.”
Sean was rendered speechless.
“Liam, stop worrying about Lyse. Even if you scold her, given her character, she will not listen to you and come home. Just let her
be. She’s an adult,” advised Jonah, who seemed unbothered by the incident.
“I will station a team of guards to the hospital and stand guard in front of Jasper’s room. Sean, I’ll have to trouble you to keep an
eye on them. Inform me right away if that bastard lays a finger on Lyse,” instructed Liam.
“Roger that, Mr. Liam!” Sean almost stood at attention from the young colonel’s air of authority.
Liam seethed, “If he tries anything on Lyse, I’ll make him stay in that hospital for the rest of his life.”
Jasper happily took his meds and applied the ointments since Alyssa agreed to stay by him.
The hospital served some bland dinner that wasn’t even nutritious, but he wolfed it down because he was in a good mood. The
food tasted like the best meal he’d ever had.
Alyssa felt hungry after staring at Jasper for a while. She ordered a set for herself as supper and forced herself to finish the
tasteless food as she refused to waste food.
“You should eat something nutritious, for example, some soups and stews,” she casually suggested.

“Sounds good, Can you make that for me?” he replied with anticipation.
“I made those for you all the time in the past, but you never appreciated them,” she retorted with a
chuckle and put aside her tray.
Then, she headed for the bathroom with her pajamas and toiletries. She added, “Mrs. Rosie is a good
cook. Get her to make soups for you.”
With that, she slammed the bathroom door close.
He felt remorseful at her remarks. Restarting their relationship from scratch seemed a difficult task.
When she appeared again, she had changed into a coral silk pajamas. She looked radiant with her bare
face. She appeared more youthful without the makeup that always made her look commanding.
He pressed his lips as his heart raced.
“Why are you looking at me like that? First time seeing my bare face?” she questioned. She was spraying
some mist on her face due to the dry air in the room.
“I saw you bare-faced many times,” he replied, swallowing hard to suppress his desire. “Your bare face
has just... stirred up some memories.”
“Is that so? Why do I feel like you’re just physically aroused?” she mocked him and took a seat on the
couch.
Her reply dumbfounded Jasper. She was better than anyone in clapbacks.
“Look, here’s the border. You’re dead if you trespass,” she warned him and lay on the couch.
Then, she pulled down her sleeping mask and covered herself with the blanket while adjusting for the

best position. “I’m sleeping.”
“Sleep on the bed,” he advised.
“Wow, are you seriously thinking of sharing a bed with your ex-wife? You’re really seeking trouble,” she shot back coldly.
“No, you misunderstood me. You’ll sleep on the bed, and I’ll take the couch,” he corrected with a bitter
smile.
“One more word from you, and I’ll leave. You took your medications anyway. Now, you hold nothing over me.” She refused to
follow his words. Instead, she threatened him.
She managed to shut him up. Of course, he wouldn’t want her to leave after going through all the trouble

After they turned off the lights, the room fell into silence. The sleepless Jasper lay on his side and occasionally stole glances at
Alyssa, admiring her. Despite having her back to him, she looked like a perfect, moonlit work of art.
“I’ll leave if you keep staring at me,” she suddenly opened her mouth, as though she had eyes on the back
of her head.
“Sorry to interrupt your sleep,” he apologized, feeling spooked. He was extremely deferential in her
presence.
“It’s alright. I can tell you’re not asleep from your breathing,” she blurted out and surprised herself. Jasper
was equally astonished.
Aching inside, she curled up and clutched her sleeve tightly. She was angry at herself. How pathetic had
she been in the past three years to remember every detail of her loveless husband?
Jasper’s eyes widened. The intense feelings of guilt almost crushed him.
Throughout his three years of marriage, he had slept soundly each night without a care while Alyssa

endured countless lonely nights. He wondered how she had managed to survive.
“Alyssa, I was really a huge jerk,” he finally croaked after a long pause.
“It’s fine. It’s all in the past. Let’s not repeat our mistakes.”
“Alyssa, I’m serious. I-”
She shut her eyes and cut him off with a snicker. “If you had genuinely cared for me, you wouldn’t have
waited until now to develop feelings for me. I’m not dumb. I won’t mistake the fleeting change in your
taste for true love.”
