Chapter 1298
As Zephyr spoke, Susan’s families exchanged knowing smiles, their faces
lighting up with such joy that it seemed as if beams of happiness might burst from
their eyes.
Susan, whose heart had been seething with anger moments before, felt a wave
of calm wash over her at Zephyr's words. She couldnt help but crack a smile.
That smile, however, pulled at her tender cheeks, and she winced with the sting.
She quickly covered her face with her hands.
Lucy was the first to catch on. With a flattering smile, she said to Zephyr, “Our
dear Susan is utterly devoted to Mr. Lysander. If she could stay by his side, she’d
guard him day and night without a second’s hesitation. Even if it meant risking
her own life, she wouldn't
flinch.”
Lucy saw an opportunity and seized it, hoping to position Susan closer to
Lysander. If Susan could snag the role of Lysander’s lady, the doors to fortune
could swing wide open
for them.
Bruce chimed in, “Absolutely, Susan was just telling us how she can’t bear the
thought of Lysander in danger without someone by his side. She wishes she
could be with him
around the clock.”
The ambitions of the Bruce family were laid bare for everyone to see.
Should Susan find her place beside Lysander, what need would her family have
to worry about money again?
Bruce had gambled away a lifetime of savings in the stock market, thanks to
Lucy's ill-advised trading. He'd been like a headless fly ever since, buzzing
around in constant
agitation without direction.
He'd called Thalassa several times, demanding money, but was refused every
time.
He no longer had any control over Thalassa and needed to prop up Susan to
keep the cash flowing. After all, she was still his flesh and blood.
Thalassa had long known about Susan's designs on becoming Lysander’s
woman and the lengths to which she would go for that. There had been that
incident with the drugged wine, hoping to seduce him in his vulnerable state.
Now, she was leveraging her role in saving Lysander to seek a place by his side.
Watching the eager faces of the family, Thalassa sneered inwardly with disdain.
Her gaze inadvertently drifted to Lysander, who stood just a step outside the
ward. Their eyes met, his impenetrable gaze seeming to pierce through her.
The intensity of his stare caused Thalassa’s heart to skip, and she quickly looked
away.

If he was so grateful to Susan, let him show his gratitude himself. Susan had
always wanted to be his woman, and granting her wish would be the ultimate
thank-you.
Lysander’s deep eyes clouded with annoyance as he saw Thalassa’s drifted
gaze.

He couldn't stand by and watch Bruce's family slander Thalassa. He had brought
her here to clear up the rumors that she was out to harm Lysander, not to fuel
them further.
After all, he was telling the truth.

With that statement, Susan cast another shadow on Thalassa’s character,
implying she was fickle and flirtatious-supposedly Lysander’s woman, yet
entangled with Ethan.
Ethan snapped, “Susan, what nonsense are you talking about!”
Susan adopted a look of wounded innocence, tears welling up in her eyes as if
she were the victim of some grave injustice, “Zephyr, Mr. Ethan is right, my words
were all lies...”
Her face wore the mask of someone oppressed and forced into admitting
unfounded
accusation.
