Their boss, Lenny, did not respond to Chase's words as usual. Instead, he glanced at him before shifting his gaze to someone else.
"I don't know if everyone here still remembers the oath we took when we first became reporters. Do you still remember what our primary responsibility is?"
'I remember,' Rita quietly answered in her mind. 'Respect for truth and the public's right to know the truth are a reporter's primary responsibilities.'
Everything she did was to fulfill the oath she had made at the beginning. However, while the oath was simple, putting it into practice was incredibly difficult, especially when walking the path of a true reporter which was fraught with many challenges and obstacles.
"I believe everyone here hasn't forgotten our primary responsibility. However, as time goes by and years pass, it seems that some people have forgotten why they embarked on this journey in the first place." Lenny slammed the newspaper on the table heavily. Silence filled the conference room, and no one dared to speak. Although they did not know what was happening or why Lenny was so angry, they could sense the heavy atmosphere.
"It's normal for there to be some discord among colleagues, and I've never intervened excessively. I've always told newcomers to respect their seniors, and I've told you seniors to take more care of the newcomers because that'll only benefit you in the long run. However, a certain someone has been abusing their power as a senior reporter and recklessly bullying the newcomer. Is this what I've taught you?"
Chase's heart skipped a beat. He did not know why Lenny suddenly brought this up. However, among the people present, he was the one who bullied the newcomers the most.
Rita was puzzled. Who was Lenny going to criticize? Considering the atmosphere, it probably was not her.
Lenny continued, "Chase, do you think what I just said is correct?"
Chase broke out into a cold sweat. "Of course you're right, sir. It's just that some newcomers completely disregard their place and often argue with their seniors... I think in such situations, we should assert our seniority to put them in their place. Otherwise, they'll just become too arrogant in the future."
"It seems that Chase has a lot of insight when it comes to disciplining juniors. Why don't you share your insights?"
Lenny's voice was authoritative, and Chase had no choice but to speak up.
"Well, it's like this. I believe we seniors should be more tolerant. I usually am. But sometimes, some newcomers. I just don't know their place, and that's when we need to slightly teach them a lesson and make them aware of their status and responsibilities. But of course, ultimately, it's all about caring for the juniors. I believe with time, the newcomers will understand our good intentions."
