"It wasn't me, Mr. Iverson. It wasn't..."
It was a struggle for Yvonne to speak. Her eyes reflected hurt and innocence.
No one knew better about the consequences of betraying Christopher than her. Yvonne did not want to die, not because death scared her. She simply did not want to disappear off the face of the earth without a trace or meaning.
Hence, she tried to get herself out of it. "Mr. Iverson, what do I get for betraying you? Taylor and I are the only ones well-versed in this case. You would've figured everything out in no time if I betrayed you. Why would I be so foolish to put myself in that situation?
"Besides, I have not stepped out of Pivotage, and you have eyes all over the place. My every move is under your surveillance. I wouldn't have the chance to communicate with Ms. Thompson and Mr. Salvador How would I betray you?"
Yvonne seemed to be heading in the right direction because Christopher's aggression subsided.
Eyeing her chance to de-escalate the situation, Yvonne said, "You gave me my life, Mr. Iverson. I'm nothing without you. I once set Mr. Salvador up. If they defeated you, they would come after me next." Though still suspicious, Christopher released the grip on Yvonne's arm.
Taylor barged in.
"I have bad news, Mr. Iverson."
Christopher tugged his necktie irritably. "What now?"
"D-Drew is here."
Yvonne shook violently.
Her throat seized up when she remembered those bright eyes.
"What did you say? Drew?"
Christopher gritted his teeth and asked menacingly. "Is he alone?"
"That's right."
Taylor gnashed his teeth in resentment. "The guy must be up to no good to enter our turf on his own. Mr. Iverson, should I teach him a lesson?"
"I doubt you can do anything to hurt a special agent." Christopher nudged his golden-rimmed glasses up. "He must be confident he would leave unscathed to enter Pivotage alone. Yvonne, change your clothes and meet him."
"Mr. Iverson, I-" Yvonne's heart raced, and her head broke out in a sweat.
"Make him happy and bait him. Find an opportunity to kill him."
Christopher curled his lips wickedly and chuckled in her ear. "If you are loyal, as you said, don't leave me waiting for too long."
Drew appeared in the fanciest private room on the highest floor of Pivotage.
A muscular arm, hidden beneath his dark trench coat, rested casually on the edge of the sofa. His gaze held a mix of indifference and nonchalance. He was too intimidating to be approached.
