Chapter 772
“I’m drinking to numb my wistful thinking,” Leopold suggested without a hint of evasion.
Hertha fell silent. As a witness to the past romance between Thalassa and Leopold, no one understood better who it was that
Leopold yearned for.
“Leopold,” Hertha began with guilt tinging her voice, “I apologize for my thoughtless words earlier. Thalassa has moved on and
she doesn’t blame you. You should do the same and start anew.”
She felt guilty and thought she had probably hurt him with her words. Her thoughts were muddled with alcohol so she was
rambling and losing her marbles.
She realized she really couldn’t get drunk. It always led her to speak without thinking.
Leopold dismissed her apology, “I’m not upset. You shouldn’t blame yourself.”
Hertha wanted to comfort him further, but she had already said all there was to be said. It was up to Leopold to sort through his
feelings.
To let go of the past was to give himself a chance at peace.
Leopold drove away after dropping Hertha off.
The next morning, Thalassa was awakened by her phone’s incessant ringing. She lifted her hand to answer the call, but a wave
of weakness washed over her and left her aching all over.
Images from the last night flashed across her mind. Lysander had been unusually passionate; his movements were filled with an
unrestrainable desire..
She had passed out eventually.
His actions were different from their usual encounters. There was some semblance of a normal couple’s intimacy between them
this time.
Why was he behaving so strangely?
Could it be because of what she had said yesterday, that she liked his type of man?
She had learned from past experiences not to provoke him, and that was why he said something to please him. But she hadn’t
expected this outcome.
At least she could see their children whenever she wanted. The freedom to visit her children was enough to satisfy her.
Thalassa managed to sit up and reach for her phone on the bedside table. But by the time she had it in her hands, the call had
ended.
It was a missed call from Ethan.
She glanced at the time. It was half past nine a.m.!
She was late for work again. Ethan’s call was probably to remind her to get down to work.
Thalassa didn’t bother to return the call. She felt it would be inappropriate in her current state.
She needed to get dressed first anyway.
Thalassa propped her waist and got up. The room was empty except for her. Lysander was probably already at work.
She marveled at his vitality. He had kept her up late into the night; did he not feel tired at all?
She was so exhausted that she felt like she could sleep for days.
That day, Thalassa wore a high-necked blouse and buttoned it all the way to the top deliberately.
Even so, it just barely concealed the love bites.
Arriving at the office, Thalassa headed straight to the secretary’s office.
Betty cast a sidelong glance at her, her words saturated with disdain, “You’ve been here less than two months and haven’t even
passed the probationary period. And you’re late again and again. Do you think a few flattering words to Mr. Ethan will give you
free reign?” Thalassa paused, realizing Betty was referring to her comments at the previous night’s dinner.
To prevent any further matchmaking attempts with Jason, she had suggested that Ethan was her ideal man.
